Doggy Tales
Gizmo
Hello there!!.I just wanted to send you comments re. the Dog that became a member of our family approx 3 years ago.
Gismo is a Lurcher....we got him from SARA ..he was around 3 months old...we went to see him at a house in redcar..he was being looked after by a lovely lady there.
To be honest..at first we didn't know what to make of him..as on his papers he was put down as a 'Lab. cross'...he began to grow...his nose popped out...his legs became longer...and longer...he was VERY vocal....and in fact..i'm ashamed to say we did even consider..that maybe we had made a mistake...HOW WRONG WE WERE!!!...Gismo is the most loving dog we have ever had...he is such a lazy dog, who likes nothing more than laying...full out... on the sofa..on his back...snoring!!!...
He loves everyone who comes to the house..and is very loving. I have to tell you that many people have wondered if he needs lots of exercise...he likes a good walk....and a run on the beach now and again...but is just as happy with a couple of shorter walks.
There are days when the weather is bad...he will not even stepover the doorstep...and is happy in the garden/yard area.
His big weakness is food..he eats anything that is available...so we have to be very strict....when he was younger..he could manage to 'help himself' out of cupboards...but he has calmed down lots since then.
he loves his toys...and he likes to hide them around the house..usually under the beds...and then decides to 'hunt ' ...late at night!!!...this is Gismo's way of stopping in the room with you...he hates being by himself...and loves to be with someone at all times....although we can pop out for an hour or two ...he prefers having company.
He does have a 'BAD' record though...he was told he could never go to a certain 'kennels' ever again...we went on holiday for a week...and he escaped from his 'pen'...and insisted on having the company of the owner for a week....he never stopped howling if he was left....and he had lost his voice by the time we returned...so we never all go away together now...our son who lives at home takes holiday from work to stay at home with the dog....(.he prefers that anyway!!!!)

I had to tell you our dog',Gismo', is one of the best things to ever happen to this little family...and I thank you all for all your hard work from the bottom of my heart.
He is lovely...a true pet...and if anything he looks after us.
Our daughter has special needs and her behaviour can be quite a challenge..but Gismo seems to recognise this...and adapts his behaviour around her....he lays on the bottom of her bed some nights...and it calms her.
When we first contacted SARA...our little dog had died very suddenly..and a week later my Mum past away..also very suddenly...Gismo was just the creature to help in our healing process...and he continues to love us all as much as we love him.
I want to tell anyone who wants a family pet....consider a Lurcher...you will not regret it!!!!!
Best Wishes....
Julie Hodgson.
Belle
Belle a blind Shih Tzu was rescued from the council dog pound on the 9th December 2006.
She lived in a SARA foster home for 6 months and was re-homed in June 2007 to a lovely retired couple.
As a frequent visitor to our monthly meetings, Belle touched the hearts of everyone she came into contact with, she is still very much missed by SARA members and her foster home although we see her quite often at SARA events.
Above is a photograph of Belle, dressed as a fairy, with her new owners winning 2nd prize in the best dressed class at this years annual fun dog show.
To the right is another photo of Belle, at a SARA event, with her new "family".
Scruffy
Scruffy is now 16 years of age and has lived very happily with his owner for 9 years.
He is a very happy and friendly dog and is fussed over by everyone he meets as he goes out for his walks sometimes wearing his T-shirt bearing his name.
His favourite walk is to the local bakers where he likes his sausage roll he receives as a treat.
Scruffy is one of Sara’s early Rehoming successes.
Unfortunately since taking these photographs Scruffy has sadly passed away.
Have you got a story about a dog or cat from SARA to share?
If you have a story about a dog or cat that you have adopted from SARA, it would be great if you could send it to the SARA address for the attention of Mel. We will try and put some on the web site.
