Buck is a handsome 4-year-old Greyhound looking for a loving forever home, and we have a real soft spot for these wonderful dogs here at S.A.R.A!
Greyhounds are often misunderstood because of their racing background and athletic appearance, but they are such a lovely breed. Often described as couch potatoes, they tend to enjoy a comfortable bed, a leisurely walk, perhaps a little sprint and then a well-earned snooze! They may be incredibly fast when they want to be, but many are surprisingly gentle, affectionate and happy to enjoy the quieter side of life.
Like the other Greyhounds in our care, Buck is an ex-racing dog who has spent much of his life in kennels. Moving into a home will be a new experience for him, and he will need time to adjust to household routines, new surroundings and all the little things that come with family life.
Buck is a much shyer boy by nature and can be a little reserved when meeting new people. He is a sensitive soul who needs time to feel comfortable and learn that he can trust you. However, once he gets to know you and that bond begins to develop, his loving side shines through. He simply needs someone who will be patient with him, allow him to approach in his own time and understand that trust cannot be rushed. For the right person, watching Buck blossom into a confident and affectionate companion could be incredibly rewarding.
❤️ Buck's journey so far
Buck came into our care alongside his kennel mate, Rossi. Unfortunately, Buck arrived with a fracture to his foot which had previously been left to heal on its own. Following assessment, he is now due to undergo surgery to have a plate fitted to help address the problem.
Buck will need time to recover from his operation, and his exercise will need to be carefully managed in line with veterinary advice. His new family must be prepared to follow his recovery plan, attend any recommended check-ups and understand that he may need some additional support compared with a Greyhound without an existing injury.
We also want to give potential adopters reassurance about Buck's ongoing medical needs. S.A.R.A will put a pre-existing condition agreement in place for his affected leg. This means the charity will cover costs relating to his existing leg condition and associated future problems, which may include arthritis and any pain relief medication he requires as a result. The details of this agreement will be explained to potential adopters before adoption.
🐕 Walks, exercise and recovery
Buck's exercise needs will be a little different from those of a healthy Greyhound while he recovers from surgery. Initially, he will need restricted activity and controlled, lead-only toilet breaks, following the instructions provided by his veterinary team.
As his recovery progresses, exercise can be increased gradually when his vet advises it is safe to do so. His long-term activity levels will need to take his leg into account, particularly if he develops arthritis in the future. He will still benefit from gentle walks, sniffing opportunities and mental stimulation, but his comfort and mobility must always come first.
Like other ex-racing Greyhounds, Buck must never be allowed off-lead in unenclosed areas due to his prey drive. Once his leg has recovered sufficiently and his vet has confirmed that more exercise is appropriate, a secure, fully enclosed area may provide a safe opportunity for him to stretch his legs.
🏡 What Buck needs in his forever home
A patient and understanding family: Buck needs people who will give him time to build trust, avoid overwhelming him and allow him to settle at his own pace.
A calm, predictable environment: A quieter home with a consistent routine will help this sensitive boy feel safe and secure.
A comfortable place to rest: He will appreciate a well-padded bed and, during recovery, a non-slip resting area where he can get up and lie down safely.
Careful recovery support: His new owners must be prepared to follow veterinary guidance regarding restricted exercise, medication, rehabilitation and follow-up appointments.
Appropriate exercise: His activity must be tailored to his recovery and long-term mobility, with gentle, controlled exercise initially and any increase guided by his vet.
A safe home environment: Slippery floors, jumping on and off furniture and unnecessary stairs may be difficult during recovery. A calm, accessible space will help him rest safely.
Ongoing medical care: Buck may develop arthritis in his affected leg and could need pain relief or other veterinary support in the future. S.A.R.A's pre-existing condition agreement will cover costs relating to his affected leg and associated future problems, as outlined in the agreement.
Mental stimulation: Gentle enrichment activities, food puzzles and sniffing games can help keep his mind occupied without putting unnecessary strain on his leg.
Careful outdoor management: Buck must remain on a lead in unenclosed areas. Off-lead exercise should only be considered in a secure, fully enclosed space and when his veterinary team confirms it is appropriate.
A loving home: Above all, Buck needs someone who will see beyond his shyness and his injury, recognising the lovely, affectionate boy waiting underneath.
Buck originally came into our care with Rossi, but the boys have been coping well living as neighbours, and we feel they can find their forever homes separately. Buck may be able to live with another suitable sighthound, subject to careful introductions and compatibility. Any potential home will need to take his sensitive nature and recovery needs into consideration.
Buck may not be the sort of dog who rushes over to greet you straight away, but give him time and patience, and you will discover a loving companion who wants to feel safe and cherished. He deserves a chance to leave kennel life behind and discover the comfort of a home where he can truly relax.
If you have a gentle approach, a patient heart and a comfortable sofa waiting, could you be the special person Buck needs? ❤️
